The AAFP will again have a group of social media-savvy family physicians experiencing the annual meeting and encouraging others to do the same.
Two of last year’s Social Media Ambassadors—Mike Sevilla, MD, from Ohio, and Jen Brull, MD, from Kansas—return this year. They will be joined by former AAFP Board Chair Reid B. Blackwelder, MD, from Tennessee, and Kristina Zimmerman, MD, a first-year resident at Lancaster General Health Family Medicine Residency in Lancaster, PA and former student member of the AAFP Board.
The ambassadors will use a variety of social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, and Meerkat to promote member use of social media during FMX as well as to keep attendees and other followers up to date about the latest events and experiences.
“It will help bring another dimension to FMX, especially for those at the event for the first time and those who aren’t here,” said Kirk Ackerson, AAFP social media manager. “By capturing and sharing their experiences on social media, our ambassadors will enable others to participate and experience this event in a whole new way.”
These members were selected because of their strong level of social media influence and the solid following they have in the family medicine community.
While the ambassadors will have certain special, behind-the-scenes opportunities, such as interacting backstage with various speakers, Ackerson emphasized that they will mostly share FMX experiences that match those of their fellow members. Since networking is so integral to FMX, he said, attendees should seek out and interact with the ambassadors at every opportunity.
“I’d love for people—when they see the ambassadors on the floor or in a session—to go up and introduce themselves, or follow along and retweet and share,” Ackerson said. “Engage with them. Have some fun.”
Be sure to follow #AAFPFMX to engage in the conversation and share your experiences at FMX 2015.
